BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Central Michigan University gymnastics team opened its 2006 season with a dual meet loss to Bowling Green State University Saturday night, falling by a score of 189.325 - 187.950.
CMU started the meet on the uneven bars, posting a total of 46.725 as a team. Jules Passy led the way with a 9.675, which was good enough for a tie for first on the bars. Freshman Brittany Logan had a solid collegiate debut, taking sixth with a score of 9.400. The Chippewas best event was their next one, the vault, with a score of 48.400. Junior Sheena Smith won the event with a score of 9.825. Mattie Crawford was second with a vault of 9.700. CMU's lowest counted score was a very solid 9.575 from Jules Passy. After two rotations, CMU trailed BG in the meet by just a half-tenth of a point.
The Chippewas, however, struggled in their final two events. On the floor exercise, CMU got a second-place finish from Crawford with a 9.675 for its best score on the event. Still, following the third rotation, the Chippewas trailed by only a tenth of a point.
On their last event, the balance beam, solid efforts from Stephanie Langley and Danielle Espinoza were not enough to offset falls from each of the other four CMU competitors on the event. Langley tied for second with a score of 9.700, while Espinoza grabbed fourth place with a mark of 9.550.
CMU had three gymnasts who competed in all four events. Passy captured the all-around with a total score of 37.800. Smith was second at 36.850, with freshman Jessica Neel third at 36.200.
CMU is back in action next weekend with another MAC dual meet at Northern Illinois on Sunday, Jan. 29. The meet begins at 2 p.m. CST in DeKalb, Ill.
