THE FACILITY
The Chick Sherwood & Tom Borrelli Wrestling Center, which is located with the John G. Kulhavi Events Center, opened during the 2010-11 season. The 12,000 square foot practice room includes three full-size mats, as well as an area adjacent to the mats for fitness equipment. The facility is located just steps from Central Michigan Wrestling's competition floor at McGuirk Arena, providing an ideal warm-up area for the Chippewas during home meets.
The facility is named after Chick Sherwood, who was Central Michigan University's head wrestling coach for 25 years. Sherwood posted an all-time record of 196-125-6. His 1970 team won the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) title and his 1986 and 1987 teams were Mid-American Conference champions. He was named MAC "Coach of the Year" three times in 1974, 1986 and 1987. Sherwood guided Central Michigan to an eighth-place finish in the NCAA Division I finals in 1981 and sixth place finish in the NCAA college division finals in 1971.
Current CMU head wrestling coach Tom Borrelli has built a dynasty at Central Michigan, distinguishing himself as one of the most highly respected names in collegiate wrestling. In 2018 he was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Michigan Chapter, joining an elite group of the sport’s legends. Now in his 32nd year in charge of the program, Borrelli has guided the Chippewas to 14 Mid-American Conference regular-season titles, and 14 MAC Championship titles, including 11 straight from 2002-12.
