Better known as "Doc," Sweeney served Central first as an athlete and later as a teacher/coach ... lettered in football, basketball and track for three years, and was graduated in 1931 ... captained the 1930 football team ... served as Central's frosh line coach in 1933 prior to a six-year prep coaching career at St. Joseph and Saginaw High Schools ... returned to Central in 1939 and was line coach for the Chippewas until 1953, twice turning down the head coaching position ... founded CMU gymnastics program and his team traveled throughout the state putting on clinics and promoting Central ... two of his football products were Little All-American linemen - Warren Schmakel and Ken Loop ... started City of Mt. Pleasant Recreation Program ... he is deceased.
