A 1911 graduate of Central, he spent 31 years at his alma mater before retiring in 1956 ... taught in St. Johns, Bay City and Spokane, WA., as well as Eastern Illinois after graduation ... returned to CMU in 1925 as an assistant professor of geography ... became head of the aeronautics department in 1943 and was named head of geography in 1944, a position he kept until retirement ... active in athletics as an undergraduate, he chaired the Faculty Athletic Committee for 20 years and was well-known throughout Michigan as a football official ... all four of Joe and Ida Carey's children attended CMU - Terry, Pat, Paul and Betty Lou ... Joe died in 1968 at the age of 82
