Men's Track Prepares For Drake Relays

THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University men's track and field team will compete at two venues. A select group will be at the Drake Relays on April 28-29 while others will compete at Hillsdale.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU men's track and field program is headed up by head coach Jim Knapp, assistant coach Craig Fuller and graduate assistant Greg Halberg. Knapp, who is in his 15th season, led the Chippewas to second-place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor Mid-American Conference championships in 1999 and was named MAC "Coach of the Year" for both seasons. Since 1986, he has coached 31 individual MAC champions and four All-Americans including Greg Richardson and Richie Brinker in 1999. Fuller, who also serves as the Chippewas' head cross country coach, led Central to the MAC cross country championship in 1999. He has helped four CMU athletes to All-American status including Richie Brinker (1997-98) and Ryan Watson (1998). Halberg is in his first season with the Chippewas.
LAST WEEKEND--The Chippewas competed at the non-scoring Eastern Michigan University Twilight Meet on Friday.
Ronnie Zatkoff (Clinton Township/So.) and Dana Thomas (East Lansing/Fr.) tied for first in the high jump with a mark of 6-4 3/4. Thomas also took second in the 400m hurdles (54.21).
Other top performances were turned in by: Greg Richardson (Lansing/Sr.) who took second in the 110m high hurdles (14.19), Pat Walderzak (Frankenmuth/So.) second in the discus (46.90m), Clive Roberts (Scarborough, Ontario/So.) third in the 100m (10.80), Jamell Jefferson (Detroit/Sr.) second in the 400m (48.34), Mike Wilusz (Royal Oak/So.) third in the 800m (1:55.29), Nick Squires (Clare/So.) second in the hammer (175-00), Carl Taylor (Warren/Jr.) third in the hammer (170-1), Nathan Parker (Fowlerville/Sr.) tied for third in the high jump (6-2 3/4) and Matt Loughead (Clinton Township/Sr.) second in the javelin (178-11).
KNAPP ON LAST WEEK--"I am so proud of how our young men competed at Eastern Michigan. They dealt well with the adverse weather conditions and came together as a unit. We had a lot of great performances despite the weather."
BACK IN ACTION--Senior Greg Richardson returned to action at Eastern Michigan after being out with a hamstring injury. He is the defending MAC outdoor champion in the 110m high hurdles and earned All-American honors in the event last year.
UPCOMING--The Chippewas are at the Central Collegiate Championships on May 6.
