THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University women's cross country team resumes action the week after a week off. The Chippewas host the Central Collegiates on Friday, Sept. 29, at 4 p.m. The meet will be held at the Riverwood Golf Resort and will feature teams from the Great Lakes.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU women's cross country program is headed up by head coach Kathleen Raske Sparrey and assistant coach Karen Lutzke. Raske Sparrey led the Chippewas to a fifth-place finish at the 1999 indoor Mid-American Conference track and field championships and a fourth-place finish at the MAC outdoor finals while Lutzke was the head women's cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at Michigan State (1990-98) and the head women's and men's cross country and women's track and field coach at Olivet (1998-99).
PREVIEWING THE COLLEGIATES--The Central Michigan women's cross country squad returns to action in the Central Collegiate Championships on Sept. 29 at the Riverwood Golf Resort. The meet will start 4 p.m. The Chippewas last participated in the meet in 1998. At the last collegiates, Brook Creed (Walkerville/Jr.) finished 15th in 18:33. Other current Chippewas to race in the event included Patty Langworthy (Holland/Jr.) who was 77th (20:14) and Tami Lauritzen (Wyoming/Sr.) who took 52nd (19:28) .
MEL BRODT RECAP--The Central Michigan University women's cross country team took second place at the Mel Brodt Invitational held at Bowling Green on Sept. 16. Toledo was first with 31 points.
The top individual runner for the Chippewas was Brook Creed (Walkerville/Jr.). She finished in second place in 18:01. Also in the top 10 for CMU were Danielle Quisenberry (Middleville/Fr.), eighth at 18:20, and Cami Moll (Zeeland/So.), 10th at 18:22.
Other top finishers included Stefanie Burklow (Clarkston/Sr.), 11th at 18:23, Melissa Miller (Portland/Fr.), 12th at 18:23, and Tami Lauritzen (Wyoming/Sr.), 18th in 19:03.
ASSISTANT COACH KAREN LUTZKE ON THE CENTRAL COLLEGIATES--"We can't hold back this weekend. This race will give us an excellent opportunity to work on some things such as trying to add more people to our pack. Brook Creed (Walkerville/Jr.) has been running extremely well for us so we're going to try to move our pack closer to her. We're not exactly sure who's going to run in this meet yet. Since it's a home meet, they all want to race in it but we have three big meets in a row so some athletes may have rest. We're still working towards the conference meet where we'll need everyone ready to compete and contribute."
LUTZKE ON THE CONFERENCE COMPETITION--"We were so close to winning against Toledo two weeks ago. It is bringing two or three quality athletes with it again to the Central Collegiates this weekend. Eastern is coming into the race with three quality runners. It has two All-Americans on its team. It should be exciting to watch the individuals race."
