THE TEAM-The Central Michigan women's cross country team will next compete in the NCAA District meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is on Nov. 10 and will start at noon. The race will be held at the LaVern Gibson Championships course.
Head coach Kathleen Raske Sparrey and assistant coach Karen Lutzke head up the 2001 women's cross country team. The two guided Central Michigan to the 2000 Mid-American Conference (MAC) championship, the second title in the school's history. It was the first title that CMU won outright. Lutzke earned MAC "Coach of the Year" laurels for her efforts last season.
READY TO GO - "We're going to be ready to race at the NCAA district meet," said coach Karen Lutzke. "We know we can run with the teams in the MAC. We haven't beat a team outside of our region so it's going to be a challenging race for us. We need to step it up and show that we can be better team than what we were at the MAC meet."
RECAP- The Central Michigan women's cross country team tied for fourth at the Mid-American Conference championships last weekend. It finished with 120 points.
Toledo took top honors with a 71-point showing. Following the Rockets were: Ball State 79, Kent State 82, Central Michigan 120 and Miami 120, Western Michigan 162, Ohio 188, Akron 190, Marshall 248, Eastern Michigan 262, Buffalo 271, Bowling Green 311, and Northern Illinois 312.
Brook Creed (Walkerville/Sr.) and Danielle Quisenberry (Middleville/So.) were the first to cross the finish line for the Maroon and Gold. Creed was 10th in 18:40 and Quisenberry was right behind with an 11th-place finish in 18:42. Also scoring for the Chippewas were: Karen LeRoy (Oxford/So), 17th in 18:59, Kristen Podein (Belmont/So.), 31st in 19:20, and Melissa Miller (Portland/So.), 51st in 19:45.
Creed and Quisenberry brought home All-MAC honors. Both were selected to the second team. It is the second straight season that Creed has earned All-MAC accolades.
A LITTLE BEHIND THE PACE - "I'm a little disappointed with the results from the MAC meet," Lutzke said. "The type of race we ran is the kind of race we should have had going into the meet two weeks ago. It's the best we've ran this season but we could have run better. We didn't have the perfect race but we had a good race. "Brook Creed had a solid race for us and Danielle Quisenberry ran had an awesome race. Karen LeRoy had good race and it showed that she was capable of running with Creed and Quisenberry."
HONORED - Brook Creed and Danielle Quisenberry finished the MAC championships with All-MAC honors. Both were selected as second-team All-MAC. The top 12 finishers are selected to the All-MAC squad with the top six earning first-team distinction. It is the second straight season Creed has earned the honor while it is Quisenberry's first. Cami Moll (Zeeland/So.) was All-MAC last season but did not race this season due to injury.
