Men's Track Competes At Michigan Intercollegiates

THE TEAM--The Central Michigan University men's track and field competes at the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, Feb. 10.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU men's track and field program is headed up by head coach Jim Knapp, assistant coach Craig Fuller and graduate assistant Greg Halberg. Knapp, who is in his 16th season, led the Chippewas to a second-place finish at the 2000 indoor MAC meet and a third-place outdoor finish. Since 1986, he has coached 38 individual MAC champions and five All-Americans including Greg Richardson in 1999 and 2000. Fuller, who also serves as the Chippewas' head cross country coach, led Central to the MAC cross country championship in 1999. He has helped four CMU athletes to All-American status including Richie Brinker (1997-98) and Ryan Watson (1998). Halberg is in his second season with the Chippewas.
LAST WEEKEND--A select group competed at the Meyo Invitational held on Saturday at Notre Dame.
The Chippewa contingent was led by Jeff DeLong (Muskegon/Sr.) who took top honors in the 800m. He claimed first with a time of 1:50.95.
Other top performances were turned in by: Clive Roberts (Toronto, Ontario/Jr.) who took third in the 60m (6.91), Ronnie Zatkoff (Clinton Township/Jr.) fourth in the high jump (6-8 3/4), Steve Wolf (Sterling Heights/Fr.) fifth in the high jump (6-6 3/4), Ron Miller (Stanton/So.) fifth in the 800m (1:52.05), Ian Searcy (Canton/Jr.) sixth in the 800m (1:52.05), and Aaron Gebauer (Bad Axe/Jr.) eighth in the pole vault (15-3).
KNAPP ON THE MICHIGAN INTERCOLLEGIATES--"This is for state bragging rights. The meet will be a toss-up after Eastern Michigan. It will be an exciting format for us to compete for team and individual titles."
KNAPP ON THE MEYO INVITATIONAL--"Jeff DeLong did a nice job in winning the 800m against an outstanding field. The meet was good opportunity for our athletes to run against a quality field. This sets us up for this upcoming week at the Michigan Intercollegiates and in three weeks at the Mid-American Conference Championships."
DELONG WINS AGAIN--Senior Jeff DeLong won the 800m for the second week in in a row. He turned in a season-best time of 1:50.95
UPCOMING--CMU hosts the Jack Skoog Open on Feb. 16 and the MAC Championships on Feb. 23-24.
