THE TEAM--Central Michigan University men's track and field squad competes at Michigan on Saturday, April 14. Competing at the scored meet will be Michigan, Ohio State and Michigan State.
THE COACHING STAFF--The CMU men's track and field program is headed up by head coach Jim Knapp, assistant coach Craig Fuller and graduate assistant Greg Halberg. Knapp, who is in his 16th season, led the Chippewas to a second-place finish at the 2000 indoor MAC meet and a third-place outdoor finish. Since 1986, he has coached 38 individual MAC champions and six All-Americans including Greg Richardson in 1999 and 2000 and Jeff DeLong in 2001. Fuller, who also serves as the Chippewas' head cross country coach, led Central to the MAC cross country championship in 1999. He has helped five CMU athletes to All-American status including Richie Brinker (1997-98) and Ryan Watson (1998). Halberg is in his second season with the Chippewas.
LAST WEEKEND--The Chippewas finished third at Indiana on Saturday.
Indiana won with 180 points and was followed by Cincinnati (117), CMU (116), Iowa (108) and Ball State (61).
Jeff DeLong (Muskegon/Sr.) led the Chippewas with a first-place finish in the 800m. He took top honors in a time of 1:50.80. DeLong also took fourth in the 400m (48.42).
Other top performances were turned in by: Luke Humphrey (Sidney/So.) who took second in the 5,000m (15:08.62), Aaron Gebauer (Bad Axe/Jr.) second in the pole vault (16-2 3/4), Johnnie Birdsong (Detroit/So.) second in the 400m (55.01), Dana Thomas (East Lansing/So.) second in the long jump (22-9), Clive Roberts (Toronto/Jr.) third in the 100m (10.74), Kevin Sule (Hemlock/Fr.) third in the 800m (1:52.85), Steve Wolf (Sterling Heights/Fr.) third in the long jump (22-1 1/2) and fourth in the triple jump (43-7 3/4), and Pat Walderzak (Frankenmuth/Jr.) third in the hammer (183-9) and third in the discus (163-11).
DeLONG WINS--Senior Jeff DeLong won the 800m in his first outdoor race of the season. The Muskegon native had a time of 1:50.80.
DOUBLE DUTY--Junior Pat Walderzak took third place in the discus and hammer. He posted mark of 163-11 in the discus and
183-9 in the hammer.
UPCOMING--The Chippewas host the USTCA Quad on April 21.
