THE TEAM?The Central Michigan University men's track team competes at Bloomington, Ind., to compete at the scoring Indiana USTCA Quad this Saturday, April 13.
THE COACHING STAFF?The CMU men's track and field program is guided by head coach Jim Knapp, assistant coach Craig Fuller and strength and conditioning/jumps coach Greg Halberg. Knapp, who is in his 17th season, led the Chippewas to a second-place finish at the 2001 indoor MAC meet and a fourth-place outdoor finish. Since 1986, he has coached 43 individual MAC champions and six All-Americans including Greg Richardson in 1999 and 2000 and Jeff DeLong in 2001. Fuller, who also serves as the Chippewas' head cross country coach, led Central to the MAC cross country championship in 1999. He has helped five CMU athletes to All-American status including Richie Brinker (1997-98) and Ryan Watson (1998). Halberg is in his third season with the Chippewas.
NOTRE DAME RESULTS -- The Central Michigan University men's track team ran at Notre Dame in the Spring Opener on April 6. Notre Dame, Michigan State and Western Michigan were among the teams competing.
Senior Ronnie Zatkoff (Clinton Township/Chippewa Valley) and freshman Adam Lyon (Mesick) led CMU with first-place finishes. Zatkoff finished first in the in the high jump at 6-8 and Lyon in the 400m hurdles with the time of 53.35.
Bringing home second-place finishes were sophomore Derold Sligh (Saginaw/Heritage) in the 400m (48.01), freshman Don Wilkins (Trenton) in the 5000m (14:43.32), freshman Mike Sidlauskas (Sparta) in the hammer throw (167-7), sophomroe Steve Wolf (Sterling Heights/Stevenson) in the long jump (45-7 1/4) and the 4x400m relay consisting of Zatkoff, Sligh, freshmen Soji Jibowu (Saginaw/Heritage) and Johnie Drake (Detroit/Cass Tech) with the time of 42.03.
KNAPP ON THE SPRING OPENER -- "It is great to have a competition under our belt. The guys did a great job. Most of the teams at the meet have already competed this season. It was a very positive experience."
KNAPP ON THE USTCA QUAD -- "We will be stepping it up this week. This will be a scoring event and Indiana is very good. We will build on last week's performances.
The Chippewas continue on the road at the USTCA Tri on April 20 and the Drake Relays on April 25-27. CMU's home opener is slated for May 4 when it hosts the Central Collegiates.
