MOUNT PLEASANT-- The Central Michigan University women's cross country team has two weeks off to prepare for the Mel Brodt in Bowling Green, Ohio. This will be the first time that CMU has run this meet in three years.
"The Mel Brodt will be a more competitive race," said head coach Karen Lutzke. During the 5k race, Lutzke wants the focus to be on running as a team.
"This will be another meet were we focus more on what we need to do and less on the competition," said Lutzke. The Mel Brodt is schudule for Saturday, September 13, at 2 p.m.
LEADING THE PACK-- The top runner in the Drenth was senior Melissa Miller (Portland) leading her team along with the other seniors. "Melissa has a lot of talent and I don't think that she has reached her potential yet," said Lutzke. Melissa turned in a top time of 18:33 in Friday's meet. Along with Miller, all five seniors finished in the top eight during the Drenth Memorial. "Our seniors know what they want to do and know what it takes to get there," said Lutzke. "That's were they should be."
DRENTH MEMORIAL -- The Chippewa women's cross country team finished the Jeff Drenth Memorial, a non-scoring meet, with eight runners in the top 10. Miller lead the way winning her first meet title with a time of 18:33.
Teresa Bongiovanni (Washington/So. ) followed her with a time of 18:47. After Bongiovanni followed Cami Moll (Zeeland/Sr.) 19:00, Danielle Quisenberry (Middleville/Sr.) 19:01, Karen LeRoy (Oxford/Sr.) 19:15, Megan Newton (East Lansing/Fr.) 19:24 and Holly Klamer (Martin/So.) 19:25. Rounding out the top 10 was Shannon Webster (Deaborn/Sr.) with a time of 19:47.
Lutzke felt the team looked good in their opening meet. " The whole team ran well on Friday and I think that the Jeff Dreth was a stepping stone for this team becoming a competitive squad in the conference," she said.
