THIS WEEK - The Central Michigan University men's track and field team heads to Eastern Michigan University for the MAC Championships on Friday, Feb. 27, and Saturday, Feb. 28.
Picked as the team to beat in the preseason, the Chippewas will face off against their conference rivals in Ypsilanti as they look to improve upon last year's second-place finish. Friday's events will start at 10:30 a.m., and Saturday's events will begin at 11 a.m.
MAC CHAMPIONSHIPS - "The results from this meet determine the overall success of our season," said head coach Jim Knapp of the MAC Championships. "Everything that we do throughout the course of the year is done with this event in mind.
"Having the opportunity to show if we are as good as we were advertised to be in regard to our pre-season ranking and still remembering how close we were at Sykes-Sabok meet really have helped everybody stay focused on what needs to be done."
LAST TIME OUT - CMU finished its home indoor season with a strong showing at the Jack Skoog Open on Feb. 20. The team tallied nine first-place finishes as well as 19 top-three finishes in the meet.
The Chippewas were led with first-place finishes by Johnie Drake in the 60m (6.69), Pierre Vinson in the 200m (21.69), Jeff Powers in the 3,000m (8:30.76), Matt Warner in the high jump (6-8 1/4), Mafu Ndumi in the long jump (22-1), Ben Morris in the triple jump (45-10), Mike Marsh in the shot put (54-4 1/2) and Mike Sidlauskas in the weight throw (56-1).
Earning second-place finishes for the Maroon and Gold were Vinson in the 60m (6.72), Greg Gogola in the 200m (22.27), Jeff Davis in the mile (4:10.14), Clarence Glenn in the 60M hurdles (8.05), Derek McLaughlin in the shot put (49-4 1/2) and Marsh in the weight throw (55-4.25).
JACK SKOOG RECAP - "We were very focused for this event and the results speak for themselves," said Knapp. "We had a great week of practice before the meet and a lot of people really stepped up and made some great contributions. Plus, we did not suffer anymore injuries prior to the MAC Championships, so it was a very successful weekend."
