MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University's student-athletes took part in a canned food drive in the Mount Pleasant community on Sunday, Oct. 30, netting more than 5,000 food items for the American Red Cross.
A total of 313 CMU student-athletes went door-to-door in Mount Pleasant to collect 5,206 food items in just two hours on Sunday afternoon. The football team, with 92 athletes participating, collected 1,523 items. Women's track and field and cross country and men's track and field and cross country collected 891 and 676 items, respectively.
Student-athletes canvassed the area neighborhoods in groups according to sport. The women's track contingent of Kari Taylor, S Danhoff, Mary Raney, Charity Sunderman and Jackie Comwell collected 319 cans, the most of any group regardless of sport. CMU football players made up the groups finishing second and third in terms of goods collected.
The CMU student-athletes take part in the canned food drive each fall, and annually make one of the largest donations to the American Red Cross Food Pantry.
