MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University announced today that Don Helinski will become its new sports information director, effective July 1.
A 1996 graduate of CMU, Helinski will replace Fred Stabley Jr. who is retiring on July 8. Stabley has been the Chippewa SID since 1982.
"I've been passionate about Chippewa athletics from my first day on campus and Chippewa Pride has a special meaning for me and my family," Helinski said. "I treasure the relationships I've built with the coaches, student-athletes and staff members the last several years and look forward to the constant challenge of helping to build championship programs at CMU."
Helinski began working in the CMU sports information office in January of 1995 as an undergraduate and then was an intern for two years from 1997-99. He became a full-time assistant in 1999 and the associate SID in June of 2001.
A native of Memphis, Don has handled coverage of men's basketball since 2001 and softball since 1999 as well as working with volleyball in 2004. He has coordinated much of the work on CMU's athletics Web pages and football and basketball game programs.
Don lives in Mount Pleasant with his wife, Athena, who is a physican assistant at Central Michigan Community Hospital, and their newborn daughter, Gabrielle Marie.
