MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University student-athletes will be going door-to-door in Mount Pleasant on Sunday, Oct. 29, collecting items for the American Red Cross Food Pantry.
For over 10 years, the Chippewas have held a food drive around Halloween to benefit the American Red Cross Food Pantry. This Sunday, CMU student-athletes will hit the streets from 4 to 6 p.m. to collect canned and non-perishable food items.
"All of the student-athletes look forward to this event," Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Connie Mallinson said. "All the different teams work together for a great cause. We only get together as a big group a few times a year and it is a lot of fun. It is also a great way for us to be a part of the community and give back."
Last year, CMU student-athletes collected over 4,700 items. Following the collection, the teams head to the pantry where they stock the shelves with the new items. The Chippewas' effort was the second-largest contribution to the Isabella County chapter during 2005.
The food pantry is in special need of items this year, so any donations the community can provide the CMU student-athletes would be appreciated by many.
"It's important because it's an opportunity to help those less fortunate," junior Red Keith said. "We're blessed to have the things we have, but there are people out there that are struggling every day. The Red Cross does a great job of helping people who are in difficult circumstances."
