BOSTON, Mass. - Former Central Michigan University cross country star Luke Humphrey ran a personal best time of 2:15:23 to place 11th at the Boston Marathon yesterday. Humphrey, who runs for the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project based in Rochester, Mich., competed in the Boston Marathon for the first time this year. Robert Cheruiyot of Kenya won the race with a time of 2:07:14.
Humphrey competed for CMU from 1999-2003, earning All-Mid-American Conference honors three times in his career. He was also named All-Great Lakes Region twice, and was a two-time Academic All-MAC selection at CMU.
Humphrey now trains with and runs for the Hansons-Brooks Distance Project, an Olympic development program designed for post-collegiate athletes who meet time standards for various distances and relocate to the Rochester area. Brothers Keith and Kevin Hanson started the program in 1999, which currently has 14 men's team members, and serve as coaches. Three other Hansons runners finished in the top 15 in Boston - Brian Sell, who was fourth in 2:10:55, Clint Verran, who finished just ahead of Humphrey in 10th place with a time of 2:14:12, and Chad Johnson, the 15th-place finisher in 2:19:29.
