ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Three Central Michigan University men's track and field athletes posted NCAA qualifying marks in their events during the two day Len Paddock Invitational at the University of Michigan. Pole vaulter Marcus Briedinger, thrower Greg Pilling and middle distance runner Abraham Mach all qualified for the NCAA Mideast Regional to be held May 26-27 at the University of Tennessee. All three won their events at Michigan this weekend.
Briedinger, a freshman from Alma, Mich., joins teammate Dave Jones in qualifying for the pole vault at the Mideast Regional. He matched Jones' team-best mark of 16-6 3/4 to take the top spot in the event. Jones finished third with a clearance of 16-0 3/4. Pilling's throw of 170-0 in the discus on Saturday ensured his place at the NCAA regional, while Mach, another freshman from East Lansing, Mich., ran 1:50.39 in the 800m to get under the qualifying standard by one-hundredth of a second.
Other event winners for CMU this weekend were John Pilling in the javelin on Friday with a throw of 172-4 and Pierre Vinson in the 100m on Saturday with a time of 10.60.
Greg Pilling turned in a second-place finish behind his brother in the javelin (170-6), while the finish was reversed in the discus (161-0). Steve Wezner ran second in the 400m (48.33) to Michigan State's Jeremy Orr.
Several of CMU's seniors did not compete this weekend as they were taking part in commencement exercises in Mount Pleasant on Saturday.
CMU will have its full complement of athletes in action at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which begin this Thursday, May 11 and continue through Saturday, May 13 at the University of Toledo Track and Field Complex in Toledo, Ohio. The Chippewas are the defending MAC Outdoor champions.
