MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University junior Matt Loiselle has been added to the field for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 3000m steeplechase, making him the fifth Chippewa to qualify for the national meet. He will compete in Sacramento, Calif. June 7-10.
Loiselle finished eighth in the 3000m steeplechase at the Mideast Regional last weekend, missing out on an automatic qualifying spot. He was in the at-large pool based on his regional qualifying time of 8:48.15, but the final at-large bid went to Abraham Kutingala of Alabama, whose time of 8:48.00 was just barely better than Loiselle's. However, Kutingala elected to scratch from the steeplechase event to concentrate on the 10,000m, where he also had qualified for the NCAA meet. That opened up a spot for Loiselle in the 3000m steeplechase, sending him to the national competition for the second consecutive year. He competed in the same event in 2005 after also receiving an at-large bid into the competition.
Loiselle joins automatic qualifiers Clarence Glenn (110m hurdles) and Dave Jones (pole vault), as well as previously announced at-large entrants Johnie Drake (100m) and Pierre Vinson (100m), in representing CMU at the NCAA Championships. The final of the 3000m steeplechase will be shown during CBS Sports' live coverage of the final day of the meet, Saturday, June 10, from 3:30-6 p.m. EDT.
