MOUNT PLEASANT - The Mid-American Conference announced the final standings for the two institutional awards given to the top men's and women's athletics programs across all MAC sponsored sports, and Central Michigan University finished in the top half of the standings for both the Reese Trophy (men) and the Jacoby Trophy (women). CMU's men's teams ranked third overall among the conference's 12 programs, the third consecutive season in which it has finished in the top three. The women's teams slotted sixth out of 12 schools.
Points are awarded based on each school's finish in each of the up to 10 men's or 11 women's MAC-sponsored sports in which it competes. An institution may count either indoor or outdoor track, but not both. The total number of points amassed is divided by the number of sports in which the institution competes, determining an average. The institutions are then ranked according to that average, with the top institution earning the requisite award.
On the men's side, CMU was buoyed by championships in wrestling and outdoor track, which earned it 12 points each. Baseball's West Division title and second-place conference finish also earned 12 points for the school. The 5-3 record in conference play from the football team merited 8.5 points, with the men's cross country team's fifth-place finish good for seven additional points. CMU finished the year with an average of 8.75 points, good for third place behind Reese Trophy-winner Kent State (9.5 points) and Miami (9.25 points). CMU has won the Reese Trophy once since joining the MAC in 1971, capturing it during the 2000-01 academic year.
The women's gymnastics team garnered the most points for CMU in the Jacoby Trophy race, snagging 11 points with its second-place effort in 2006. The softball team earned 9.5 points by placing fourth in the conference during the regular season, and the women's track squad scored 8.5 points taking fifth at the indoor championships. The basketball, field hockey and soccer teams added seven points each to CMU's cause. CMU averaged 7.13 points, placing sixth behind women's winner Western Michigan (10.33 points), Kent State (9.17 points), Eastern Michigan (8.7 points), Miami (7.36 points) and Ball State (7.27 points). CMU won the Jacoby Trophy back-to-back during the 1989-90 and 1990-91 academic years.
The men's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner David E. Reese. Reese was the first-ever MAC Commissioner and served the league from its inception in 1946 until 1964. The women's trophy is named for former MAC Commissioner Fred Jacoby. Jacoby was the MAC Commissioner from 1971-82 and is credited with incorporating women's athletics into the league's structure. Jacoby currently serves as commissioner of the Lone Star Conference.
