In just her second season, sophomore Jackie Rivard has become a fixture at the front of the pack for the Central Michigan University women’s cross country team.
Rivard led CMU with a sixth-place finish at Friday’s Jeff Drenth Memorial, completing the 5K loop in 17:55. She has been the top CMU finisher in all eight meets of her young Chippewa career.
However, Michigan State posted the top four finishes in the non-scored meet that also included runners from Ferris State.
Sophomores Amanda Rudert and Michelle Diverio posted impressive finishes of 10th and 11th for CMU. Rudert clocked a 18:08 and Diverio was right behind at 18:14.
“I was pleased with how we competed and raced,” coach Karen Lutzke said. “We worked together as a team in a couple different groups. Our split between No. 1 and No. 5 was a little over a minute and we’ve got to get that closer.
“Rudert and Diverio really stepped up us. It was a good start overall and we’ll get some other people running soon who didn’t get a chance to compete today.”
Freshman Emily VanWasshenova was 16th (18:55.7) and Sara Prout (18:59.0) and Kelly McClure (19:04) each cracked the top 20 with finishes of 18th and 19th, respectively.
The Spartans Alissa McKaig turned in the event’s top time with a mark of 17:10.
CMU is now off until heading to Bowling Green for the Mel Brodt Invitational on Sept. 16.
