Ohio Repeats MAC Women's Title

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- A trio of Ohio University runners earned first team All-Mid-American Conference honors in leading the Bobcats to the 2007 MAC women’s cross country championship.
The victory gave Ohio back-to-back conference titles for its 10th overall championship in school history, the most by any conference member. Carime Reinhart, last year’s individual champion, finished fifth (17:51) to lead the way for OU. She was immediately followed by her teammates Annie Beecham (sixth, 17:55) and Kari Summers (seventh, 17:56).
Laura Neufarth of Miami University claimed the individual title, completing the 5K course in 17:35 and helping the Redhawks to a third-place finish (77 points). Neufarth battled with Ball State’s Allison Bishel for nearly the entire race, as the two pulled away from the pack early in the race.
Akron was the runner-up with 58 points, led by Cassandra Schenck’s fourth-place individual finish (17:49).
Toledo rounded out the top four with 89 points. Ball State (135), Central Michigan (174), Bowling Green (218), Western Michigan (224), Kent State (230), Buffalo (232), Eastern Michigan (286) and Northern Illinois (289) capped off the team standings.
The MAC honored the top-seven finishers with first team All-MAC honors. Neufarth, Bishel (second, 17:38), Buffalo’s Mary Veith (third, 17:48), Schenck, Reinhart, Beecham and Summers were all recognized for their efforts.
Ohio head coach Clay Calkins took home Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. It is the eighth time a Bobcat women’s cross country head coach earned the MAC’s top honor.
