MOUNT PLEASANT Three members of the Central Michigan University women’s cross country team have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference squad for 2007. Senior Libby Carpenter and juniors Kelly McClure and Amanda Rudert represent the Chippewas on the academic squad.
Carpenter is a repeat selection from 2006, earning Academic All-MAC honors for the second time in her career. The senior had a pair of top 15 finishes this season and was CMU’s fourth-place runner at last weekend’s MAC Championships. Carpenter was the 2007 recipient of CMU’s prestigious Boyden Award recognizing a student-athlete in their final year of eligibility for their athletic, academic, and community service efforts. The Whitehall, Mich. native carries a 3.73 grade point average majoring in biology.
Rudert is also a two-time Academic All-MAC honoree, and the junior was one of CMU’s top two runners in every meet this season. She had four top 15 finishes, including a fourth-place effort at the Central Collegiates and a ninth-place finish at the Jeff Drenth Memorial. The Mount Pleasant, Mich. native sports a 3.85 grade point average as a biology major.
McClure was named Academic All-MAC for the first time in cross country and the second time in her career, as she was also an academic honoree for outdoor track in 2007. The junior was CMU’s top runner in all but one meet this season, highlighted by a win at the Central Collegiates and a fourth-place showing in the 4K at the Michigan Intercollegiates. She was CMU’s top finisher at the MAC Championships with a 19th-place finish. An Iron Mountain, Mich. native, McClure carries a 3.96 grade point average majoring in health fitness.
CMU’s three Academic All-MAC honorees matches Miami for the most of any school. A total of 15 student-athletes were named to this year’s women’s cross country academic squad. The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have at least a 3.20 grade point average and participate in at least 50 percent of the contests for their particular sport. The team is voted on by the schools’ Faculty Athletics Representatives.
The Chippewa cross country team is back in action next weekend, competing at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional meet at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind., on Saturday, Nov. 10.
