MOUNT PLEASANT – Senior Jeff Powers and sophomore Abraham Mach will be the two Central Michigan University men’s track and field members to open their outdoor season this weekend, as they compete in the Stanford Invitational this Friday and Saturday, March 30-31 in Stanford. Calif. Powers will run the 10,000m, while Mach will compete in the 800m at the highly competitive meet at Stanford University.
“The meet at Stanford features some incredible competition,” CMU head coach Jim Knapp said. “This is a great opportunity for both of these men to run against fellow top-flight athletes and post a qualifying mark right out of the gate. Jeff will run the 10K, and its an event that you can’t compete every weekend, so we wanted him to have the chance to run in a competitive environment right away and try to post a time to qualify him for the national meet early in the season.”
Mach will run in the 800m at 1:05 p.m. PDT on Friday afternoon, while Powers will run in section two of the 10,000m at 8:38 p.m. PDT on Friday night. The NCAA Regional qualifying time in the 800m is 1:50.40, while in the 10,000m the regional standard is 29:30.00. Powers could automatically earn a spot at the NCAA Championships, bypassing the regionals, with a time under 28:45.00.
The whole of CMU’s men’s track team will open its season next weekend in the only home meet of the outdoor season on Saturday, April 7.
