MOUNT PLEASANT -- For the second straight week the Central Michigan University men’s track team will battle a familiar Mid-American Conference foe along with a Big Ten foe. The Chippewas are heading to the Simmons/Harvey Invitational hosted by the University of Michigan this Saturday, Jan. 26.
CMU is competing against host Michigan and Eastern Michigan in a non-scored event. Men’s field events begin at 9 a.m. with running events set to start at noon.
“There will be some great competition at this meet,” coach Jim Knapp said. “We are facing some top-notch programs in Michigan and Eastern Michigan. Since it is a non-scored event, we will be moving people around a little. We are looking forward to getting out there and seeing how much we can improve.”
The Chippewas are coming off a third-place finish at the Akron vs. “Michigans” meet last weekend. The host Zips won the meet with 111 points followed by Michigan State (83) and CMU (62).
Abraham Mach won the 800m for the second straight week, taking the event in a time of 1:53.42. He also ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400m relay team joining Kyle Fortin, Nick Agosti and Dave Ashcraft for a time of 3:19.14.
The Chippewas also had a strong showing in the pole vault with Mike McGregor posting the highest height at 16-0 3/4. Marcus Breidinger made it a one-two finish in the event with a mark of 15-7.
Chippewa Sweep: CMU swept the Mid-American Conference Track Athlete of the Week and Field Athlete of the Week awards following the Akron meet. Abraham Mach was the track honoree after winning the 800m and anchoring CMU’s first-place relay team. Mike McGregor was the field selection thanks to his victory in the pole vault.
Familiar Face: Former Chippewa runner Matt Kaczor has been named interim assistant coach for CMU. Kaczor replaces longtime assistant coach Craig Fuller, who also served as head cross country coach. After graduating from CMU with a degree in secondary education and history in May of 2005, Kaczor began his coaching career at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan, serving as an assistant coach for OU’s cross country and track and field teams. He coached two all-conference performers in the 3000m steeplechase while at Oakland.
