ANN ARBOR Marcus Breidinger and Mike McGregor finished one-two in the pole vault to lead the Central Michigan University men’s track team at the Simmons/Harvey Invitational at Michigan on Saturday.
Breidinger cleared a height of 16-2 while McGregor reached 15-9.
“This group continues to lead us and we expect them to continue to do that all season,” coach Jim Knapp said. “Pole vaulters are a unique fraternity. In most athletic events you may not be friendly with the competition during an athletic event but pole vaulters are a different breed. They all cheer for each other and offer suggestions to each other, regardless of team. We have a number of guys in this event and they are continuing to make each other better.”
The open meet was not scored as athletes from Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Detroit and Oakland competed.
“The guys continue to work hard,” Knapp said. “We saw some excellent competition and the times are slower in relation to last week because of a smaller track compared to Akron’s huge one.
“The effort is there, we are just so young and have so many holes. On paper it doesn’t look that good but we are continuing to see improvement.”
CMU’s most notable performance on the track was freshman Dave Ashcraft’s runner-up showing in the 400m. He ran a 49.87.
“Dave has been doing a great job for us,” Knapp said. “His indoor 400m time is at or near his PR for outdoors in high school. He has been a pleasant surprise.”
George Flanner also placed third in the shot put (49-0) and Marcell Maxwell was fourth in the 60m (6.93).
The Chippewas are now off until heading to the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame on Feb. 8-9.
