MOUNT PLEASANT After a week of rest, the Central Michigan University men’s track team is ready to get back into action. CMU ais traveling to a pair of meets this weekend, with part of the team heading to the Meyo Invitational at Notre Dame on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, while several of the younger Chippewas are venturing over to Saginaw Valley State for the Collegiate Open Indoor Classic on Friday, Feb. 8.
“We were able to get a lot accomplished in practice,” coach Jim Knapp said. “The team worked hard and was tired by Friday, so it was nice to have the weekend off to freshen up. This week, we can work on fine tuning some things to get ready for competition.”
CMU will face some top-notch competition at the Meyo nvitational with many teams from the Midwest entering the non-scored meet.
“This is the toughest competition of any meet during the indoor season,” Knapp said. “Not only will the best teams and athletes from across the East and Midwest be there, but several standout post-collegiate athletes will compete as well. It is a great opportunity to measure ourselves against top-level competition.
“The guys that we’re sending to this meet are tremendous competitors, and the caliber of competition that they’ll face should bring out the best in them. Hopefully, we can rise to the challenge and have some great performances.”
The meet at SVSU will provide a quality competition for some of CMU’s less experienced athletes.
“The meet at SVSU is a smaller meet that will still have some quality athletes competing,” Knapp said. “It’s a nice chance for us to get some of our young guys experience on the track in collegiate competition.”
Following this weekend’s competition, CMU will have just two more meets before the Mid-American Conference Championships. Eastern Michigan is hosting the league meet this year Feb. 29-March 1.
