NOTRE DAME, Ind. Abraham Mach’s seventh-place finish in the 800m highlighted day two of the Meyo Invitational for the Central Michigan University men’s track and field team. His time of 1:50.93 was a season best and just missed an NCAA provisional time (1:50.50).
Notre Dame hosted the non-scoring meet featuring several top athletes from around the country.
“I thought all the guys competed,” coach Jim Knapp said. “It doesn’t necessarily show in the results because the competition was so good. We’re young and an experience at a big meet like this will help us down the road, we just need more of it. When we go against this level of competition you hope the guys step up just to keep up with the pace. I think we did that.”
CMU’s 4x400m relay team placed 10th with a time of 3:16.85.
“We have three freshman in that relay and we didn’t place well but the time was good,” Knapp said. “The three freshmen also ran season best times in the 400m.”
Dave Ashcraft was 23rd (49.002), Kyle Fortin 24th (49.005) and Emanuel Sledge 31st (49.34) in the 400m.
Marcell Maxwell ran 7.08 in the 60m to place 22nd and 22.67 in the 200m to finish 23rd. In the field events, Joe Mielke high jumped 6-6 , good for a tie for 15th, while Oz Lifshitz triple jumped 44-11 (22nd) and George Flanner shot put 49-7 1/4 (14th).
On Friday, Marcus Breidinger placed ninth in the pole vault with a height of 16-4 . It tied for the second-best height but he placed ninth on account of attempts. CMU had a pair of runners in the 5000m as Sammy Kiprotich was 26th in 14:56.75 and Andrew Manning was 32nd with a mark of 15:48.18.
The Chippewas now head to Eastern Michigan next Saturday, Feb. 16 for the Eastern Michigan Classic. The meet will give CMU experience at the MAC Championships venue as the Eagles host the MAC meet Feb. 29-March 1.
