MOUNT PLEASANT Central Michigan kicked off the outdoor track season on Saturday by hosting Eastern Michigan in the CMU Open.
The visiting Eagles won the meet with a score of 115 compared to CMU’s 59 points.
“The guys did a good job and there was a lot of effort,” coach Jim Knapp said. “It is early in the season so the marks aren’t outstanding. Overall, I was pleased with where we are at ... we were better today than we were at the MAC indoor championships. We need to continue to work hard and control what we can control.”
CMU won five of the 19 events that were contested.
Picking up wins for the Chippewas were Matt Erdmans in the 800m (1:55.24), Sammy Kiprotich in the 3000m (8:41.21), Sean Anthony in the 2000m steeplechase (6:22.83) and Joe Hasler in the pole vault (15-0). The 4x100m relay team also won with a time of 42.58.
“Erdmans ran well in the 800m and Anthony tackled a new event in the steeplechase and he went out and won it,” Knapp said. “It was nice to see Hasler win the pole vault. We’ve been blessed with some great vaulters lately. But, Marcus Breidinger is redshirting this outdoor season and Mike McGregor is competing in the decathlon. We’ve got our top two vaulters out but Joe still wins the thing. We had some swirling winds today and he made the best out of the situation.”
Five other Chippewas placed as runner-up. Nana Adomako was second in the 100m (11.34), along with Marcell Maxwell in the 200m (23.05), Kyle Fortin in the 400m (50.44), Brandon Post in the 400m hurdles (56.03) and Chris Pankow in the 2000m steeplechase (6:32.66).
Next up for the Chippewas are the Sea Ray Relays on April 11-12 at Tennessee.
