MOUNT PLEASANT -- Several programs within Central Michigan athletics have participated in a breast cancer awareness program in recent seasons. Now the department has taken a unified front against the disease with "Chips for a Cure."
The new initiative is a department-wide effort to raise funds and awareness toward cancer research.
The program launches this weekend, with volleyball's Dig Pink match kicking off the effort during Friday's match against Northern Illinois at 7 p.m. The funds donated will benefit the Side-out Foundation.
Fans will have access to informational materials from Zeta Tau Alpha, promoting their upcoming on-campus breast cancer awareness event. All fans wearing pink to the match will receive free admission. Donations will be accepted at the door, through a student-athlete or at the Chippewas' Side-out website.
The effort continues on Saturday during field hockey's match against Ball State at 1 p.m., with "Stick it to Cancer," benefitting the National Foundation of Cancer Research. Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support and donations can be made through the team's website on First Giving.
Both teams throughout the weekend will don special adidas "Chips for a Cure" t-shirts to show their unified support of the fight against cancer.
