NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Raeanne Lohner capped her indoor track and field season with a record performance at the Alex Wilson Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame.
Lohner broke the Central Michigan record in the mile with a time of 4:50:48, leading a group of 10 Chippewas over the weekend.
The meet served as the final opportunity for athletes across the country to meet the NCAA Provisional qualifying standards for the NCAA Indoor Championships next weekend.
Marcus Breidinger was the Chippewas’ top performer in the field events. The senior had his second-best height of the season in pole vault at 16-10 1/4 to finish third place. Fellow vaulter Mike McGregor finished fourth with a 16-4 1/2. Also competing on the field was Kevin Mays, whose weight throw of 59-4 3/4 was good for fourth. Kevin Bacon was another field competitor in the long jump and he cleared 23-1 1/4.
Christopher Thomas led the men’s squad on the track with a personal-best 48.72 in the 400m. Renaldo Powell (60m hurdles; 8.37) and Riak Mabil (5000m; 14:46.37) rounded out the running events for the men.
The other competitors on the women’s side were Shanaye Carr (60m hurdles: 8.72) and Charity Sunderman (weight throw; 56-1 3/4) and Tanisha Johnson (high jump: 5-5 1/4).
“We got some solid performances today,” head coach Willie Randolph said. “Raeanne did a nice job breaking the school record, Christopher had a personal best in the 400, Marcus posting his second-best vault and Kevin did some nice things in the weight throw.
“Our goal of getting our athletes to nationals has a lot to do with them peaking at the right time. We are moving in the right direction and are looking forward to finishing off the indoor season with some All-American performances.”
The indoor season concludes next weekend with the NCAA Indoor Championship, which start on March 13.
