MOUNT PLEASANT - With the regular season complete, the Central Michigan track and field program discovered which of its athletes will compete for a bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
The NCAA announced the athletes who qualified for the NCAA preliminary rounds (May 27-29) on Friday.
Nine athletes will represent the Chippewas when they compete against the rest of the east region. The meet is hosted by North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C.
Making the trip for the men's team are discus throwers Greg Pilling (187-3; ranked 16th in the nation/sixth in the region) and Alex Rose (181-3; 38th nation/14th region), pole vaulters Marcus Breidinger (17-2 3/4; 32nd nation/15th region) and Joshua Kettlewell (16-6 3/4; 39th region) and 400m hurdles specialist Branden Post (52.40; 51st region).
The women's squad will send Erika Schroll in the high jump (5-10 1/2; 32nd nation/16th region), Mykal Imbrock in the hammer throw (183-2; 36th region), Raeanne Lohner in the 10,000m (35:23.59; 40th region) and Dierra Riley in the 100m (11.68; 57th region).
"It is always an honor to have athletes qualify to compete at the NCAA championships," head coach Willie Randolph said. "To have an opportunity to represent CMU and the athletic family against some of the best athletes in the country makes the hard work, focus and determination to complete a goal worth it.
"Being that the regional system is now the first round of NCAAs speaks volumes of the level of competition we will be up against. Our region alone has a large percentage of individual and team national champions. We are ready to compete and we look forward to the challenge."
