MOUNT PLEASANT — Central Michigan director of track and field/cross country Willie Randolph announced the CMU cross country schedule on Tuesday.
The Chippewas will stay in the state of Michigan for five meets this season, starting with the 25th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial at Pleasant Hills Golf Course on Sept. 3.
“We are moving the opener to the site of our very first Drenth meet,” Randolph said. “Our staff wanted to do this to make it a special meet because it is the 25th year we’ve hosted it. This move will help highlight the meet as both a college and high school meet in the future.”
CMU resumes competition two weeks later at the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State on Sept. 17 before heading to Minneapolis, Minn., for the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 25.
The Maroon and Gold return to their home state for the Michigan Intercollegiates on Oct. 8 before closing out the regular season at Pre-Nationals (Oct. 16) in Terre Haute, Ind.
“Our main objective in putting together this schedule was to give the athletes the right experience and training to peak at the right time,” Randolph said. “While we stay mostly in Michigan, we built in specific meets like the Griak to give our high-level athletes another opportunity to prepare themselves for the most important part of the season; the Mid-American Conference Championships, regionals and nationals.”
The postseason gets underway with Western Michigan hosting the MAC Championships on Oct. 30 and heats up with NCAA Regionals in Rochester, Mich., Nov. 13.
The NCAA Championships will be hosted by Indiana State on Nov. 22.
The men’s squad finished third while the women took fourth at the MAC Championships in 2009. The women placed ninth at the Great Lakes Regional Championships while the men finished 11th.
