NEWS AND NOTES
Series History
The Chippewas and Anteaters have never met on the court. However, the two schools are scheduled to play a regular season volleyball match on Saturday in Irvine.
Against the Big West
CMU is 3-2 all-time against teams currently in the Big West Conference while coach Ernie Zeigler is 2-1 against the league. Zeigler is 2-1 against Cal State Fullerton, including a 70-67 season opening win over the Titans last season in the Rainbow Classic in Honolulu. The Chippewas are 1-0 all-time against Pacific and 0-1 versus Cal State Northridge.
New Mexico State Recap
Big disparities in rebounds and free throw attempts were the difference in CMU’s 78-49 loss to New Mexico State yesterday in the opening round of the Great Alaska Shootout. The Aggies outrebounded the Chippewas by 19 and got to the line a whopping 49 times while shooting 71 percent from the stripe. CMU on the other hand was just 9-of-17 at the line for 53 percent. Freshman Austin McBroom led Central with 14 points and a career-high five assists while Trey Zeigler had 12 points. Bandja Sy tallied a game-high 15 points for NMSU and Wendell McKines had a double-double of 13 points and 12 boards.
Starting Strong
A win today would give CMU a winning record through the first five games for just the second time under Ernie Zeiger (3-2 in 2006-07).
Rebounding Woes
New Mexico State outrebounded the Chippewas yesterday by 19, the second-largest rebounding deficit in the Ernie Zeigler era (20 at Cincinnati, 11/25/06).
Rebounding Woes II
After winning the battle of the boards in the opener, CMU has been outrebounded in the last three games by a -14.0 average margin.
Easy Buckets
New Mexico State made 49 trips to the free throw line yesterday and there was a difference of 32 attempts between the two teams. The Aggies’ attempts were the most against CMU since 2007-08 at Ball State when the Cardinals attempted 51 freebies, 34 more than the Chippewas.
Stringing Together Double Figure Games
Trey Zeigler is the lone Chippewa to score in twin digits in every game this season. He started his career last year by hitting double figures in the first five games before held to just five points against Temple. The season-opening stretch was his second longest of the season behind a string of 13 consecutive games of 10 or more points that started against Detroit.
Tough Defense
The Chippewas have held their opponent below 40 percent shooting from the field in all four games this season. Charlotte had the best percentage against CMU this year at .371. UC Irvine enters Friday’s game shooting .361 for the season.
