UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Multi-event student-athletes from the indoor track and field team turned in strong performances in their season debut in the heptathlon at day one of the Penn State National on Friday.
Senior Josh Kettlewell set career-bests in each of the four events today and is currently in third place in the heptathlon with 2,974 points after four of the seven total components of the event, and sophomore Timothy Reynolds is fourth with 2,762.
In addition to the heptathletes, sophomore Adam Lohner finished second in Friday's pole vault competition with a career-best vault of 15-11.
Heptathletes competed in the 60m dash, long jump, shot put and high jump today, and will round out the seven-event lineup tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1000m run.
The mark or time for each event is then given a point value out of 1000 points based against standard times. The points earned for each event are added up, and the student-athlete with the largest number of points at the end of seven components wins the heptathlon.
Kettlewell won the shot put among heptathletes with a heave of 44-01.25 to earn 694 points. He finished third in the 60m dash in a time of 7.24 for 799 points.
He also finished fourth in the high jump and the long jump with leaps of 6-04 and 21-11.5, respectively.
Kettlewell finds himself 61 points behind the leader, Uzoh Anya of Penn State.
Reynolds highlighted his day with a 22-03.75 jump en route to a third-place showing in the long jump, good for 767 points. He finished fifth in both the 60m dash with a career-best time of 7.27 and the shot put with a toss of 36-00.25, and sixth in the high jump with a career-best leap of 6-00.5.
The heptathlon continues tomorrow morning with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m run. Kettlewell will have an opportunity to improve upon his NCAA Division I national ranking of 15 in the pole vault. The ranking is determined by the Track and Field Results Reporting System.
A RECAP OF AND COMPLETE RESULTS FROM THE SVSU CARDINAL MEET WILL BE POSTED TOMORROW AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE
