MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan's men's team finished day three of the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in third place, headlined by senior thrower Ryan McCullough being named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the meet and individual championships in two events.
The Chippewas finished with 137 points on the weekend, behind 2012 MAC Champions Akron with 161 and runner-up Kent State with 150. Eastern Michigan finished fourth with 130 points.
McCullough, who was awarded the Most Outstanding Field Performer honor after his school-record MAC Championship hammer throw performance on Thursday, was joined at the top of the podium today by junior Alex Rose and senior Branden Post in the discus and 400m hurdles, respectively. Each of the three earned first-team All-MAC honors.
“Those athletes worked extremely hard all year long, and they deserved it,” director of track and field and cross country Willie Randolph said. “It was not an easy fight, but it was a fight they said they were ready for. I was proud to see them step onto the podium and take what they deserved. There were so many other athletes who didn't necessarily win from that perspective, but they won as a team, and that is just as great to me as seeing them becoming MAC Champions.”
Rose, an All-American in the discus in 2011, won the event with a toss of 180-10 on his final attempt. He won by 4-03 over Corey Knox of Buffalo. McCullough added two points with a seventh place effort of 167-07, and senior Kevin Mays finished eighth with a mark of 163-11.
Post, who also won the 2010 400m hurdles MAC Championship, took the top spot on Saturday with a career-best time of 52.11. He won by just .18 over William Cole of Buffalo.
Sophomore Cory Noeker was the lone Chippewa to earn second-team All-MAC honors after his runner-up performance in the 110m hurdles finals in a career-best time of 14.45. Junior Renaldo Powell finished sixth in 14.66 and redshirt freshman Brandon Piligian took seventh in 15.04.
Senior David Ashcraft, who like Post and McCullough was competing in his final MAC Championships, finished third in the 400m dash in a season-best 47.88. Sophomore Clay Holman finished fourth in a career-best 48.18.
Redshirt freshman Kyle Stacks stepped up in the 5,000m run to take third place in 15:14.81.
Sophomore Ross Parsons claimed a pair of fifth-place finishes in the 100m and 200m dashes. He finished the 100m in 10.75 and the 200m in 21.53.
Sophomore Parker Scott claimed sixth place in the 400m hurdles in 53.94, and Noeker finished eighth in 55.52.
Freshman Lucas Bade finished seventh in the 800m run in 1:54.72, and junior Nathan Sanchez finished eighth in 1:54.90 after coming around the first lap in third. Sanchez also took eighth in the 1,500m run in a career-best 3:52.67 earlier in the afternoon.
As conference championships and last-chance meets conclude this weekend, the Chippewas will soon have a good idea who will qualify for the NCAA First Round competition in Jacksonville, Fla., beginning in just under two weeks.
