Rose Takes Seventh in Discus at World University Games

KAZAN, Russia - Central Michigan senior thrower Alex Rose has earned seventh place in the discus throw at the World University Games.
Competing for the country of Samoa, Rose threw 57.15m (187-5) in the preliminary round to earn one of 12 berths in the finals. He secured his seventh-place finish with a mark of 58.64m (192-4) while throwing in neutral wind conditions.
"We, as a staff, are very happy for Alex," said interim director of track and field/cross country Matt Kaczor. "He and John Ridgway should be very proud. We are looking for a strong senior year for Alex."
Rose's performance at the World University Games was just his latest standout effort in a burgeoning international career. Rose will return to Russia in August, when he represents Samoa in the 2013 IAAF World Track and Field Championships in Moscow. His Samoan-record discus throw of 59.83m at Augustana College in May qualified Rose for the World Championships.
A dual citizen of the United States and Samoa, Rose just missed qualifying for the 2012 Samoan Olympic team last summer.
Competing for CMU, Rose was a 2011 NCAA All-American in the discus, placing fifth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He is a two-time outdoor national qualifier and the 2012 Mid-American Conference champion in the event, and he has one year of eligibility remaining with the Chippewas.
