MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Central Michigan's Chris Fowler was named the Mid-American Conference West Division men's basketball Player of the week.
Fowler, a 6-foot-1 junior guard, scored 26 points on 10-of-15 shooting Saturday in leading the Chippewas to a 79-77 home victory over Grand Canyon. Fowler scored nine points in the final five minutes, 18 seconds to keep the Lopes at bay as CMU improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1980-81.
Fowler added a game-high four assists and three rebounds and committed just one turnover in the final 35 minutes while playing point guard. His 26-point effort was one shy of his career best.
Fowler, who fronts the league's No. 2 scoring offense (82.2 points per game), leads CMU in scoring (13.6) and ranks No. 1 in the MAC in assists (7.4) and third in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.5).
It marks the first time that Fowler, a Third Team All-MAC selection last season, has earned league player of the week honors.
The Chippewas play at Bradley (2-4) Tuesday, then entertain Southern Illinois Edwardsville on Saturday. Both are non-conference games.
