UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Central Michigan men's and women's indoor track and field teams won six events and swept the top three spots in two events Friday at the Saginaw Valley State Doug Hanson Open.
Four of those CMU first-place finishes came from the women, two from the men.
"We competed with tenacity," said CMU director of track & field/cross country Mark Guthrie. If you are willing to do that, to challenge yourself every day, you will become successful.
"We had a lot of personal bests today. We got a lot accomplished. As a team and as individuals, we had significant growth. Track and field is always a work in progress. For Jan. 23, I'm pretty satisfied at where we are at."
The Chippewas return home on Friday to face Eastern Michigan in a dual at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track & Field Complex. The men's meet begins at 3 p.m., the women's at 5:30 p.m.
Kelly Schubert led a Chippewas 1-2-3 sweep in the women's mile at Saginaw Valley, finishing first in 5 minutes, 3 seconds. She was followed by Michaela Bundy (5:08.1) and Esther Bell (5:09.02).
The Chippewa men took the top three spots in the 60-meter dash. Tahshon Reese won in 6.95 seconds, followed by Dillon Brooks (7.04) and Lorenzo Wells (7.05).
Also for the CMU women, Kelsey Ross won the 800 in 2:16.9; Shaya Wilkerson captured the triple jump at 38 feet, 8 ¾ inches; and Devene Brown won the shot put at 50- ¾, just 2 inches shy of the school indoor record.
For the Chippewa men, Ben Wynsma was first in the mile in 4:12.29, while teammate Joseph Emmanuel was second in 4:13.54, shattering his personal best by some 7 seconds.
Reese placed second in the men's 200, while the Chippewas' Cole Walderzak was second in the men's shot put.
For the CMU women, Rebekah Petty finished second in the pole vault, while Tina Davis (60), Bridget Doughty (400) and Melinda Palinkas (3,000) each placed third.
The Chippewas' Markala Goodson and Kyla Walton tied for third in the long jump, and Bell, Ross, Bundy and Alexa Thibault teamed up for a third-place finish in the 4x400 relay.
