CMU Notches 7 Wins at Holiday Classic

UNIVERSITY CENTER - Six Central Michigan student-athletes accounted for seven first-place finishes Saturday as the Chippewas opened the indoor track and field season with a strong showing on the second and final day of the Saginaw Valley State Holiday Open at the SVSU Fieldhouse.
Nadia Williams, a freshman from Mount Horeb, Wis. won the long jump and the 60-meter dash to lead the CMU women.
Williams' winning leap in the long jump was 18-8 ½, and she clocked in at 7.65 seconds to place first in the 60.
CMU's other five victories came in field events. Dylan Banagis won the men's weight throw with a toss of 65 feet, 2 ¼ inches; Kevin Weiler captured the men's shot put, 55-1 ½; Kylee Dobbelaere won the women's weight throw, 56-5 ¾; Rebekah Petty won the women's pole vault, 13-0 ¼; and Ja'La Taylor was first in the women's triple jump, 38-0.
Those performances highlighted dozens of placings by CMU student-athletes in their season-opening event. The Chippewas host the annual Jack Skoog Triangular on Friday, Jan. 13.
The Chippewa men got second-place finishes on Saturday from Aaron Taylor (60 hurdles), Malik Peacock (60 dash), Melvin Harris (high jump), Logan Targgart (shot put), and Sam Wagner (pole vault).
Targgart was third in the weight throw and Jake Peister was third in the triple jump.
CMU's John Wixon placed fourth in the 60 hurdles, Ali Taha was fourth in the long jump, and Joseph Seghi was fourth in the heptathlon.
Seghi won the 60 hurdles in 8.65 seconds en route to his fourth-place finish. He was also fourth in both the pole vault and in the 1,000-meter run.
The Chippewas' Nicholas Malliaras (heptathlon) and Aaron Taylor (triple jump) each earned a fifth-place finish, and Taylor was sixth in the high jump.
The Chippewa women had multiple placers in the 60 hurdles, the long jump, the high jump and the triple jump.
CMU's Aisha Jackson, Danielle Horton, April Micheaux and Mikaela Grant placed second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 60 hurdles; Kyra Harrison was third and Tyra Daniels seventh in the long jump; Calli Stemple was second, Emily Helfrich was fifth, and Haley Nugent finished eighth in the high jump; and Harrison was third, Stemple and Nadia Williams tied for fourth, and Ijeoma Agomo placed eighth in the triple jump.
Micheaux was third in the shot put, Amber Wagner was fifth in the pole vault, Doofanter Nyamor was sixth in the 60, and Horton finished eighth in the 200.
