ROCHESTER, Mich. - The Central Michigan women won eight events and the Chippewa men captured four on Saturday as CMU placed first overall in the Oakland University Golden Grizzly Track and Field Invitational.
The Chippewas finished with 319 combined points to finish atop the team standings. The CMU women had 169 points, the men finished with 150. CMU topped the standings in both genders.
"Clearly what you saw was that when you get some decent weather the student-athletes will perform," CMU director of track and field Mark Guthrie said. "That good weather did us a lot of good.
"I was pleased pretty much with everybody. We showed progress. We're excited for the student-athletes when they do well, and when they do well, they get excited about what can be."
Tina Davis led the Chippewa women with three firsts. She won the 100-meter dash (11.74 seconds), the 200 (24.44) and ran a leg on the winning 4x100 relay team, which won in 46.27.
Gabriella Beauvais, Samantha Cuneo and DeJanae Terry joined Davis on the relay squad.
"Tina, definitely a standout day for her," Guthrie said. "They were all personal-best times for her."
The Chippewa women also got first-place finishes from Kelsey Ross in the 800, 2 minutes, 15.40 seconds; Devene Brown, shot put, 50 feet, 6 ¼ inches; Rebekah Petty, pole vault, 12-8 1/4; Olivia Shelton, javelin, 128-8 3/4; and Kylee Dobbelaere, hammer throw, 186-10 1/4.

"Our distance kids had several personal or season bests," Guthrie said. "We got a lot of things done. I think there's still more out there. As a coach you're always driving to find more. Good weather and good performancse and hopefully it'll bode well for us in the future."
The Chippewas go to the Jesse Owens Track & Field Classic at Ohio State next weekend.
