RIO De JANEIRO - Game time for Alex Rose.
Rose, a Central Michigan graduate, will compete beginning Friday in the discus at the Olympics. The event is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. EDT.
Rose is competing for Samoa, a country of some 190,000 people in the South Pacific near the International Date Line. He hails from West Branch in the Northeastern Lower Peninsula, and is able to compete under the Samoan flag because his father Ross is a native of that country.
There are some 35 throwers in the field. The top 12 after Friday's first round advance to Saturday's final, which carries a 9:50 a.m. EDT start time.
Rose, who was an All-American and a Mid-American Conference champion at CMU, qualified for the Olympics when he surpassed the Olympic standard of 65 meters at the Field of Dreams Throws Meet at Claremont (Calif.) College.
Rose's throw measured 65.74 meters, which is the Samoan national record and the 23rd best throw worldwide in 2016.
