MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Throwers Kylee Dobbelaere and Cole Walderzak received the Don Sazima and Jim Knapp awards, respectively, as the most valuable performers of the Central Michigan track & field team for the 2016 season.
The Sazima goes to the most-valuable member of the women's team, while the Knapp goes to the most-valuable member of the men's team.
It marked the second consecutive year that Walderzak, a senior in 2015-16 from Standish, has earned the Knapp. He earned the Male Field Performer at the Meet Award at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships in May after winning both the discus and the hammer throw.
It was his second straight MAC outdoor discus title for Walderzak. He broke his own school record in winning the hammer throw with a toss of 215 feet, 7 inches. He qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the hammer throw.
Dobbelaere, a junior in 2015-16, qualified for the NCAA East Preliminary in the hammer throw and placed fourth in hammer throw at the MAC Outdoor Championships and was sixth in that event at the MAC Indoors.
Benjamin Hayes and Samantha Cuneo earned the Lyle Bennett Freshman of the Year Awards. Hayes was named the Male Freshman Track Athlete of the Meet at both the MAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships.
Dobbelaere, Kelly Schubert and McKenzie Wieber were named captains of the women's team for the 2017 season; Dylan Banagis, Malik Peacock and Erick Huertas were named the captains of the men's team.
