
High Marks For CMU Athletics

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - The report card is in and, once again, Central Michigan student-athletes shined in the classroom as well as on the fields, on the court, the course and the track.
CMU student-athletes earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.09 for the spring, 2018 semester, marking the 39th consecutive semester that that number has been 3.00 or higher.
Overall, the cumulative GPA of Chippewa student-athletes is 3.200.
"These numbers are indicative of the high-character student-athlete that we have at Central Michigan University," said Michael Alford, Associate Vice President/Director of Athletics. "Our student-athletes take pride in approaching their academics with a serious drive and with a purpose to be the best they can possibly be.
"Academic success, like success in the athletic arena, is something we can all be very proud of."
Among the highlights:
• 282 CMU student-athletes earned a GPA of 3.00 or higher for the spring semester.
• 135 Chippewa student-athletes maintain a cumulative 3.500 GPA.
• 28 CMU student-athletes achieved a perfect 4.00 GPA during the spring semester and were named to the President's List.
• 146 Chippewa student-athletes were named to the Dean's List, an honor bestowed upon those earning a 3.500 or higher GPA.
• 68 Chippewa student-athletes earned Academic All-MAC recognition in their respective sports during the fall and winter seasons, including men's and women's cross country, field hockey, football, gymnastics, men's basketball, women's basketball, soccer and volleyball. The league has yet to name its Academic All-MAC teams for the spring season.
• Nineteen Chippewas were named a MAC Distinguished Scholar Athlete in 2016-17.
Among the individual program-to-program highlights:
• Both the men's and women's cross country teams earned All-Academic honors from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in November, 2017, marking the seventh consecutive year that the Chippewa women have been so honored and the sixth consecutive year for the men. It was the 13th time in the last 14 years that the Chippewa women have garnered the honor.
• Five members of the CMU field hockey team were named a 2017 Zach Field Hockey/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Scholar of Distinction. The honor is bestowed upon student-athletes carrying a 3.900 or better GPA.
• Three Chippewa football players were recognized by the Hampshire Honor Society. The society honors graduating seniors who maintained a 3.200 GPA or better throughout their entire collegiate career.
• The CMU golf team was received the NCAA Public Recognition Award for the fourth consecutive season. The award is based on a team's Academic Progress Rate and goes to teams in the top 10 percent in APR as measured against all other Division I programs across the country. The Chippewas have received the NCAA Public Recognition Award in each of the four years since the program's resurrection in 2014-15.
• Nine Chippewa gymnasts earned Scholastic All-American honors from the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches/Women. The honor goes to gymnasts who earned a 3.500 GPA or better throughout the entire academic year.
• The CMU lacrosse team was recognized on the Zag Sports Academic Honor Squad by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association.
• Six members of the CMU men's and women's track & field teams earned individual All-Academic honors by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
• Megan Kern, a sophomore on the Chippewa volleyball team, was named to the NCAA Academic All-District Second Team.
• The CMU wrestling team ranked 14th in the nation with a 3.29 team GPA and three Chippewas earned All-Academic recognition from the National Wrestling Coaches Association. It marked the second consecutive season and the 19th time since 1993 that the Chippewas have been so honored.
