CMU runner overcame several hurdles in earning degree, athletic success
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Former Central Michigan track & field standout Ja'Corey Lipsey has received the Student-Athlete of the Month Award from the National Association of Academic and Student-Athlete Development Professionals.
Â
The organization recognizes on a monthly basis extraordinary student-athletes who have overcome extreme adversities in order to succeed in the face of overwhelming challenges.
Â
Lipsey, who graduated in December with a bachelor of arts/science degree with a major in personal financial planning, was adopted at a young age. Lipsey was raised in Portage and shared a passion for running, which led to an opportunity for Ja'Corey to participate on the collegiate level at CMU.
Â
Lipsey endured multiple injuries along with the death of his brother, health issues and eventual death of his father, and the trauma of watching his sister suffer injuries while serving in the military in Afghanistan.
Â
Despite those emotional hardships, Lipsey persisted and eventually earned his degree and in 2018 finished sixth in the 400-meter hurdles at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships.
