Two Chippewas advance to NCAA Championships
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Central Michigan's Erin Howard set a program record and qualified for the NCAA Track & Field Championships on Saturday at the East Preliminary at North Florida's Hodges Stadium.
Howard, a sophomore from Lansing, finished 11th in the women's shot put with a toss of 53 feet, 6 ¼ inches. She broke her own program record (53-3) which she set on April 20 at the Virginia Challenge.
As a top-12 finisher in her event, Howard advanced for the NCAA Championships June 5-8 at the University of Texas in Austin.
Howard joins teammate Nadia Williams, who advanced to the NCAA Championships with a 12th-place finish in the long jump on Thursday.
Also for the Chippewas on Saturday, Shane Moffo finished 19th in 13.89 seconds in the men's 110-meter hurdles; Megan O'Neil finished 38th in 17:16.37 in the women's 5,000-meter run; Kevin Weiler finished 35th in the men's shot put with a toss of 56-1/2; and Janelle Perry placed 14th in 13.31 in the women's 100 hurdles.
Perry, a senior, came excruciatingly close to qualifying for the national as she finished just 1/100th of a second behind the 12th-place finisher, Summer Thorpe of Notre Dame (13.30).
