Reluctant at first, Chippewa thrower becomes one of MAC's best
ballMOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Senior Logan Targgart has his sights set on the NCAA Championships this season as a thrower for the Central Michigan track & field team.
Of all the different throwing events, Targgart has been exceptional with the hammer throw throughout his career. Last spring he won his second-consecutive Mid-American Conference outdoor title in the event.
Not bad for someone who didn't want to do it.
"I never actually did want to throw things," Targgart said. "I didn't want to do a spring sport as I was already competing in football and basketball in high school."
Targgart said his high school football coach encouraged track and field as a spring sport, and the throwing coach in his hometown of Coldwater was lifelong friends with his parents. The coach suggested to Targgart's mom that Logan learn how to be a thrower.
"The night before the first track practice my mom's like, 'You really should do it,' and I was like 'You know what? Fine, I'll do it, but I know I won't like it.'"
Apparently, he did. He finished his Coldwater High School track & field career with state title in both the shot put and the discus and was the school-record holder in both events when he graduated in 2016.
"I like the competition and pressure knowing your success is up to you individually," said Targgart, who earned 10 varsity letters at Coldwater, four in track & field and three each in football and basketball. "It was a lot more fun than I expected it to be."
Targgart earned the MAC Male Athlete of the Week Award in December after a career-best throw of 69 feet, 5 ¼ inches at the Grand Valley State Holiday Open. That measures as the No. 1 toss this season by a MAC thrower and ranks 15th nationally.
He has also been successful in the classroom at CMU, earning multiple Academic All-MAC honors. He earned his bachelor's degree in financial planning last spring and is now working toward a Master of Business Administration and plans to be a financial advisor.
