PEORIA, Ill. – Central Michigan cross country runners collected nine top-50 finishes in three races on Friday at the Bradley Pink Classic at Newman Golf Course.
CMU entered runners in two women's races, the white and the red. Emily Paupore led CMU in the red race with a 42nd-place finish in 21:55.3. In the white race, Hailey Hegenauer (25th) was the top CMU finisher, coming in at 23:54.3.
Adam Rzentkowski led the CMU men in 24:31.4 for 18th place.
The Chippewa women finished 17th of 37 teams in the red race and were seventh of 18 in the white race. The CMU finished 13th of 31 teams.
"We competed better, and we were more aggressive in the beginning of the race," CMU coach Jenny Swieton said. "It was exactly what we needed two weeks out from the (Mid-American Conference Championships). We're still not exactly where we want to be, but we're making huge strides."
CMU's Anya Turner was 65th and Lauren Beckmann placed 95th in the women's red race, while Hailey Lauren Lasceski was 27th in the white. Lexie Jorgens, Alexa Davis and Shannon Billette finished 43rd, 46th and 48th, respectively, in the white race.
For the CMU men, Riad Rababeh placed 35th, Owen Howard came in 39th, Hunter Fougner was 122nd and Gabe Goosen was 181st.
Swieton said that there were a number of personal bests in the men's race, several by significant margins.
"On the men's side they had an insanely good day," Swieton said. "They knocked it out of the park; the guys run an 8k, and a lot of them went through the 5k of the 8k in PR pace and pacing that for another 3k which is really hard to do.
"Across the board it was a really good day for us, I'm really happy we're coming home with more confidence and more information on what we need to do moving forward."
CMU is set to host the Chippewa Invitational at Shepherd High School on Oct. 22 (5:30 p.m.).
