MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – A big week for two Central Michigan student-athletes, and a clean sweep of the Mid-American Conference Scholar Athlete of the Week Award.
CMU's Jordan Patty and Natalie Karlen were named the MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week and the MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week, respectively, for their performances last week.
Patty, a junior right-handed pitcher on the baseball team, accomplished something that had never been done in the 115-year history of CMU baseball when he fired a perfect game in a 14-0 victory over Miami (Ohio).
A finance major who carries a 3.43 grade point average, Patty became the first MAC pitcher since 1997 to record a perfect game and the first Chippewa to throw a no-hitter since 2003. The Midland native tied his career high with 11 strikeouts and extended his scoreless innings streak to 38 2/3. Earlier this week, he was named the MAC Pitcher of the Week.
Karlen, a senior from Hagerstown, Md., made her final two games as a member of the CMU lacrosse program quite memorable, combining for 14 goals and four assists for 18 points in leading the Chippewas to dominant victories over Kent State and Akron.
Karlen, who is working toward a Master of Administration degree, became the program's all-time leading goal scorer as she scored eight goals and posted three assists in a 19-9 win over Kent State; she then tallied six goals and an assist in an 18-6 victory over Akron. She was named the MAC Offensive Player of the Week for lacrosse earlier this week.
Karlen's second goal in the Akron game gave her 164 for her career as she moved past Jocelyne Lemay, who had 163 goals from 2015-19, to the top of the list. Also during the week, Karlen set CMU records for goals in a season, points in a season, and shots in a season.
