MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan lacrosse team kicks off an important week in Chippewa Athletics on Wednesday with a big Mid-American Conference game at Robert Morris.
The week includes four Chippewa wrestlers participating in the NCAA Championships and the CMU gymnastics team partaking in the MAC Championships on Saturday.
• CMU wrestlers Matt Stencel (285 pounds), Dresden Simon (141), Corbyn Munson (149) and Johnny Lovett (157) will hit the mat with the best of the best in the NCAA Championships at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
The three-day tournament, featuring the nation's 333 top wrestlers in 10 weight classes, begins on Thursday at noon and concludes on Saturday night with the championship matches.
Stencel is vying to become a three-time All-American and cement his legacy as one of the very best to have wrestled in the storied program. Simon is also looking to add another All-America honor to his resumé after having accomplished the feat in 2020.
• The CMU gymnastics team goes into its league championship looking to claim its 17th title and first since 2018.
Last week, CMU defeated Ball State in a league dual to claim the regular season co-championship with Kent State.
The Chippewas are third among MAC teams, behind Western Michigan and Kent State, in average team national qualifying score. CMU is first, on paper, on vault; second on floor exercise; and third on balance beam and uneven parallel bars.
The meet is Saturday (2 p.m.) at Eastern Michigan.
• The CMU lacrosse team is 4-3, 2-0 MAC, while Robert Morris is 3-4, 3-0. The Colonials defeated the Chippewas twice last season en route to capturing the inaugural MAC women's lacrosse championship.
CMU is coming off a 20-6 league win over Kent State and has won four of its last five. Two of the Chippewas' three losses have come to ranked teams, No. 8 Michigan and No. 5 Notre Dame.
CMU is slated to play a nonconference game on Friday (1 p.m.) at Cincinnati (3-5).
• The Chippewa softball team is set to open MAC play with a three-game series this weekend at Akron.
CMU is 9-10 , while Akron is 3-16. The teams are scheduled to open on Friday at 3 p.m. and are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
• The CMU baseball team returns to MAC play with a trip to Miami (Ohio). The Chippewas split their league-opening doubleheader at Kent State last weekend; the final two games of the series were postponed because of weather.
CMU is 5-8 overall. Miami is 7-7 and opened MAC play last weekend by sweeping a four-game series from Bowling Green.
The Chippewas and RedHawks are scheduled to open on Friday at 3 p.m. and are slated to play a Saturday (1 p.m.) doubleheader before closing the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
