MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan men's basketball team heads to Cleveland for the Mid-American Conference Tournament this week, highlighting the week in Chippewa Athletics.
The CMU men will take on Toledo on Thursday (11 a.m.) in a quarterfinal game. The winner advances to Friday's 5 p.m. semifinal against either Akron or Buffalo.
The Chippewas are 7-22 and finished 6-12 in league play to earn the No. 8 seed. Toledo is 25-6 and won the regular season title with a 17-3 record. The Rockets are the No. 1 seed.
The Central Michigan softball, baseball, women's golf and gymnastics team are also scheduled to be in action this week.
• The Chippewa gymnastics team is set to entertain Ball State on Friday (7 p.m.) in its final MAC dual of the season.
CMU is 4-1 in conference duals and, with a win, would finish tied for first in the conference with Kent State. The MAC Championships are scheduled for Saturday, March 19 at Eastern Michigan.
• The Chippewa baseball team has one nonconference game remaining before it opens MAC play this weekend with a four-game series at Kent State.
CMU (3-7) plays at North Carolina A&T on Tuesday (4 p.m.) and then goes to Kent State on Friday (3 p.m.) for the series opener. The Chippewas and Golden Flashes are slated to play a doubleheader on Saturday (1 p.m.) and then close the series on Sunday (1 p.m.).
The Chippewas are the two-time defending MAC champions.
• The CMU softball team closes its trip to the Spring Games in Madeira Beach, Fla. on Tuesday with a doubleheader with Long Island, and then goes to Louisville for the Bluegrass Challenge.
At Louisville, CMU (7-6) will take on Valparaiso on Thursday, Indiana on Friday, and the host Cardinals on Saturday, and then on Sunday moves to Lexington, Ky. to take on 14th-ranked Kentucky and close the event.
CMU opens MAC play the following weekend with a three-game series at Akron.
• The CMU women's golf team will head to Saint George, Utah to partake in the Pizza Hut-Lady Thunderbird Invitational, hosted by Southern Utah at Sunbrook Golf Club.
The three-day, 54-hole, stroke-play event begins on Thursday and concludes on Saturday. The 16-team field includes several teams ranked ahead of CMU, including No. 78 Oral Roberts, No. 102 Seattle and No. 119 Arkansas State. The Chippewas are ranked 153rd.
• The Chippewa lacrosse team entertains Kent State in a MAC game on Thursday (3 p.m.) at the CMU Soccer/Lacrosse Complex. The Chippewas are 3-3, 1-0 MAC. The Golden Flashes are 2-5, 0-2.
